The annual national cyber defense exercise 'PANOPTIS 2016' took place from May 23 to 27, 2016, organized by the Cyber Defense Directorate (DIKUB) of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA). In this context, the Hellenic Linux Users' Group/Free Software Society (ELLAK) formed a team for the exercise through an open call and delivered a speech at FOSSCOMM 2016.

62 IT security specialists expressed interest in the privacy.ellak.gr working group of ELLAK, 32 were active participants.

Three teams were formed:

In Athens, at the National Technical University of Athens
In Thessaloniki, at the Electronic Government Center of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and
In Larissa, at the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Thessaly.
In total, 217 executives from public institutions, infrastructure providers (EVDAP, PPC, Natural Gas, etc.), telecommunication service providers, members of the academic community and individuals participated in the exercise.

Techniques for Penetration Testing, Steganography and Forensics were tested in different Windows, Linux, Network and mobile environments.

A particularly special challenge was the Capture the Flag episode, which took place in real time, and involved silently infiltrating the internal network of an operator with 11 different machines and performing various actions of particular difficulty.

The team of ELL/LAK participated in all the episodes as well as in the very demanding Capture the Flag in which they won the 3rd place, with a small difference from the two leading teams.

Open source tools and applications such as the integrated Kali Linux distribution were used to solve the episodes.

The documentation of the techniques used in the episodes by the ELLAC team will be published at https://github.com/eellak/panoptis2016

ELL/LAK intends to maintain and expand the team that participated in the exercise 'PANOPTIS 2016' and at the same time implement workshops both for the analysis of the incidents and techniques used and for the use of security software.

We thank the Cyber Defence Directorate of the General Staff, the Director Commander (M) of the Navy Mr.Spyridon Papageorgiou and all those who contributed to such a successful exercise. Above all, we thank all those who participated for the knowledge and experience they shared throughout these days.
